Synology has announced the DS415play, a four-bay successor to the two-bay DS214play. The DS415play is the second Synology NAS to support hardware video transcoding, delivers full 1080p HD video to virtually any media-streaming device, and comes with DiskStation Manager (DSM 5.0), allowing it act as a multimedia hub for any household.

The DS415play is the second Synology NAS to support hardware video transcoding, delivers full 1080p HD video to virtually any media-streaming device, and comes with DiskStation Manager (DSM 5.0), allowing it act as a multimedia hub for any household.

The DS415play is designed specifically to benefit homes and media enthusiasts who have more than one display, as it is able to share multiple streams of HD content without being tethered to a single television or computing device. Users can also play media using: DLNA, Apple TV, Roku Players, and computers; all the while iOS, Android, and Windows Phone devices allow users to access the NAS on the go.

The ever-powerful DSM 5.0 is full of integrated multimedia capabilities at no extra cost through Synology’s Package Center including Audio Station, Photo Station, and Media Server. It is built to meet the demands of a mobile society without the incurring fees associated with traditional cloud-based content solutions. The DS415play can also act as a personal, mobile, media cloud with DSM 5.0’s Video Station, which is Synology’s application for play-listing, categorizing, and presenting video content.

Synology’s mobile functionality includes apps such as: DS Video, DS Audio, and DS Photo+. Each application provides context aware access where media can be cashed, or streamed remotely from a DiskStation without a data connection.

  • Two USB 3.0, and three USB 2.0 ports for external storage, and peripherals
  • Native floating point processing for faster file previews
  • Support for the pending series of Android TV Boxes

Availability and pricing

The DS415play is now shipping and will be available in the United States within the next couple of weeks for $539.99.
