The DS216se is a more budget-friendly NAS, which allows users to create their own personal cloud.

DS416

Synology has built the DS416 to address the growing need of efficient and encrypted storage and is specifically designed for SMB and home users who require a significant amount of storage without having to go deep within their IT budget. It comes equipped with a 1.4 GHz dual-core CPU that has a dedicated hardware encryption engine, 1GB RAM, and two LAN ports. This allows the DS416 to reach quoted transfer speeds up to 221.05MB/s in reads and over 139.51MB/s in writes configured in RAID5 under a Windows environment. In addition, the DS416 offers fast encrypted data transmission, with Synology claiming speeds up to 146.5 MB/s read and 65.85MB/s write.

The DS416 also comes with three USB 3.0 ports, including one on the front panel, for convenient backup and transfer. The disk trays have the usual Synology hot swappable and tool-less design as well as network, fan, and drive redundancies.

DS216play

The DS216play features real-time 1080p H.264 and 4K H.265 Ultra HD video transcoding capabilities, which allow users to effectively stream 4K digital TV and movies to digital media players, mobile handsets, TVs, and computers; all without the need of installing a 3rd party video player.

The DS216play comes equipped with a 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU and 1GB RAM, and is quoted to boast an average of 107MB/s in reads and 91MB/sec for writes when configured in RAID1 under a Windows environment. Its built-in floating point unit adds to the user experience while its energy efficient design consumes only 15 watts in access and 6.8 watts during disk hibernation.

DS216se

The energy efficient and budget-friendly DS216se is Synology’s direct predecessor to their previous DS214se NAS released a few years ago. The DS216se is designed to offer users a way to create their own cloud as well as a full-featured file server. In addition, the NAS is quoted to deliver an average of over 102MB/s in reads and over 59MB/s in writes when configured in RAID1 under a Windows environment. The built-in floating-point unit improves the overall capability of the main CPU and helps to speed up thumbnail creation when uploading large amounts of media files.
