Synology recently announced the DiskStation DS916+, which brings scalability and new components to their DS415+ model. This marks Synology's latest addition to their Plus Series, which is comprised of servers that are designed to appeal to growing businesses and media enthusiasts. The main selling point of this NAS pertains to its scalability: users can effectively turn the DS916+ into a 9-bay server by adding one of Synology's DX513 expansion units increasing the total raw capacity of the DS916+ to 72TB (with nine 8TB HDDs). This feature helps businesses minimize their startup costs while retaining the ability to more than double their storage capacity in the future.

The DS916+ comes standard with 2GB of DDR3 RAM (upgradable to 8GB) and an Intel Pentium Quad Core CPU. From a performance standpoint, the DS916+ is more than capable of serving the day-to-day needs of most medium-sized businesses: Synology reports transfer speeds of 225MB/s read and 221MB/s write, with almost no drop in performance for encrypted transfers (through the AES-NI hardware encryption engine). Synology's hardware-accelerated transcoding engine allows users to transcode and stream 4K and 1080p videos to any devices that are connected to the DS916+, which gives it some added appeal for home users. Surveillance Station can be configured to monitor home or office space, and users can take advantage of both browser-based and mobile viewing. Many of Synology's other features (e.g., Cloud Station, File Station, Synology Hyper Backup) are accessible through DiskStation Manager (DSM).
