The chief difference between the two models is that the DS213+ offers a faster processor with hardware assist for 256-bit AES encryption. Both are designed to support backups from Windows and OS X clients along with ACL support for file-level access control, ADS support, and a notification system that can employ email, SMS, and push.

DiskStation devices feature Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) for volume management and offer Synology’s optional Cloud Station package to allow remote users to keep their files in sync without needing port forwarding, or leaving data on third-party server.
