Today Toshiba America Electronics Components, Inc. and Dell Inc. combined their technology to make SAS-based servers with the fastest random read enterprise SSDs in today’s market. These fast servers are composed of Toshiba’s PX04S SSDs and Dell’s PowerEdge R730 servers. Using a single PX04S the Dell server was able to hit 340,000 IOPS in random reads, which makes it the fastest SAS-based server.

As we’ve stated previously, The PX04S Series are 2.5”, 15mm SSDs with the largest capacity currently available of any 12Gbps SSD, at 3.84TB. The Toshiba PX04S family is comprised of 4 different models that cater to specific needs. There is a High-Endurance, Mid-Endurance, Value-Endurance, and Read Intensive model. The PX04S is dual ported and comes with a performance option that enables users to increase write performance by as much as 47%. The R730 offers the flexibility required for a host of applications as well as the ability to boast power needed for most high-performance workloads. The R730 is equipped with up to 16 bays with supported configurations of 16 x 2.5” drives or to 8 x 3.5” drives, which can mix and match SAS or SATA HDDs or SSDs. The server supports Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 processors and 24 DIMM slots to cost-effectively scale up to 1.5TB of DDR4 memory.
We were able to test the PX04S and ran it against some of the other top performing SAS SSDs currently on the market. In our latest enterprise SAS-SSD test the Toshiba outperformed all of the other drives. In our SQL server the PX04S gave us average latency as little as 8ms.
And in our Sysbench Average Transactions Per Second the PX04S was by far the performer with 4,302.2 TPS.
Combining the above performance in a server as powerful as the PowerEdge R730 one can easily see who this would lead to the fastest SAS-based server.
Availability
Both the PX04S and PowerEdge R730 servers are available now.
