UIT has announced three new products at the NAB 2012 conference in Las Vegas, including the pre-release of Media Cluster, a scale-out video and media storage solution for media and entertainment markets. It also announced two new storage products (the SV5000G2 and SV3000G2), the latest members of UIT’s Unified Storage line that are designed for medium to small enterprises with general purpose data storage and cloud data center requirements.

Media Cluster
Media Cluster is an IP based scale-out storage solution which utilizes commodity hardware yet supports the most demanding media applications such as non-linear video editing and HD streaming and broadcasting. Media Cluster nodes are made of standard Intel X86 platform appliances connected via native IP/Ethernet.
The core of the Media Cluster is a fault-tolerant parallel file system designed and optimized for streaming media with stringent delay requirements. The Media Cluster features seamless online expansion, scale-out storage capacity and aggregating network I/O bandwidth. Because of the sophisticated file system, online expansion is straightforward. Simply adding additional nodes to the Media Cluster will result in storage capacity and network throughput scale-out.
At the NAB conference, UIT is presenting a case study that illustrates the target market for Media Cluster. Utilizing UIT’s entry level storage appliances as the cluster nodes, a TV station in Hong Kong recently on-site tested UIT’s Media Cluster at its post-production studio. Running Final Cut Pro, a group of Mac servers are connected to the Media Cluster running UIT’s core distributed file system. The Media Cluster is able to deliver 24 concurrent stable streams per storage node (15MB/s each). Each node links to the Mac servers via standard GbE connections.
New Storage Platforms
The SV5000G2 and SV3000G2 are powered by the Intel Jasper Forest and Intel Bromolow platforms, respectively. Designed for enterprise, media and entertainment, medical imaging and video surveillance industries, the SV5000G2 and SV3000G2 offer superior bandwidth/throughput and IOPS in 3U/16 bay and 2U/24 bay form factor. The storage capacity of the SV5000G2 and SV3000G2 can be expanded by connecting to ultra-dense SV4060j 4U/60Bay expansion chassis for 410TB total storage capacity.
Both products are available in a variety of host connections/ports, including as 8Gb Fibre Channel, 10GbE, i-SCSI, and the expansion enclosures are connected via multiple 6Gb SAS ports.
According to UIT, the SV5000G2 with dual 8Gb FC controllers delivers 5,100 MB/s of sustained throughput. The SV5000G2 also supports enterprise features such as Snapshot, thin-provisioning, replication (both asynchronous and synchronous), cloning, and mirroring.
The SV3000G2 leverages the Intel Bromolow platform and provides lower cost storage solutions while still keeping most enterprise features of SV5000G2. The form factor of SV3000G2 is identical to SV5000G2, both chassis and controller. The superior throughput of the SV5000G2 family has made it a perfect weapon for the media and entertainment industry and an entry level solution in video surveillance, medical imaging and cloud data center applications, where cost and energy savings are major considerations in choosing a solution.
Pricing and Availability
The SV5000G2 is available now in North America, and the SV3000G2 will be available in Q3 2012. In late Q3 or early Q4 2012, UIT will announce Media Cluster pricing and product availability in US and Canada.
