Veeam Software made a few announcements recently with the largest being a new product, the Veeam Availability Platform for the Hybrid Cloud. Along with they new platform, Veeam is announcing primary storage integration with the IBM Storwize family and IBM SVC platform (to be including in Veeam Availability Suite v10). And Veeam unveiled new capabilities to support Microsoft 365.

The digital landscape has been in a state of flux over the last few years. Take the cloud for instance. At one time it wasn’t trusted, it soon moved to trusted status and a potential competitive advantage, now most companies have adopted a cloud-first strategy as a tool of survival. According to IDC, most organizations worldwide will shift to predominantly cloud-based IT environment by 2019. Not only will there be a shift in environments, companies need to be always on and always available, meaning that they need new availability tools to address these needs.

Veeam is attempting to address the new availability challenges that will be presented by this shift. Its new Veeam Availability Platform for the Hybrid Cloud will, according to the company, provide businesses and enterprises of all sizes with the capabilities to ensure Availability for virtual, physical, and cloud-based workloads in the Hybrid Cloud. Veeam plans on doing this through three capabilities: Enterprise Continuity using recovery SLOs of less than 15 minutes for all applications and data and DR orchestration. Providing availability for workloads across any cloud or location, to maximize IT investments and increase flexibility. And proactive monitoring, reporting, testing and documentation to ensure business and regulatory requirements are met.

The new platform is comprised of Veeam Availability Suite, the new Veeam Availability Console, Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows, Veeam Agent for Linux, Veeam Availability Orchestrator, and Veeam Cloud Connect. Veeam Availability Suite is the company’s flagship product and will be updated shortly with over 100 new features. Both the Agent for Windows and Linux are designed to provide availability for public cloud and physical workloads hosted on either Windows or Linux servers and workstations. Veeam Availability Orchestrator helps customers orchestrate DR through a defined DR plan, policy-driven DR testing, and compliance and documentation. And Cloud Connect provides uses with a quick and secure way to back up, replicate, and restore across different clouds.

The above features already existed from Veeam. The new feature is Veeam’s Availability Console. This new console is a cloud-enabled platform designed for service providers and distributed enterprise environments. This console leverages Cloud Connect and enables admins a method to manage remote and branch offices (ROBO) and other distributed locations, allows service providers to deliver Veeam-powered Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) and Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) services to their customers, and enables partners and resellers to launch a new service provider business.

Benefits include:

  • Veeam Availability Platform delivers the next generation of Availability for virtual, physical, and cloud-based workloads, providing:
  • Private cloud and virtual server workload Availability with Veeam Availability Suite.
  • Public cloud and physical server workload Availability with Veeam Agent for Linux and Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows.
  • Disaster recovery orchestration with Veeam Availability Orchestrator.
  • A cloud-enabled management console for service providers, managed cloud and distributed enterprise environments with Veeam Availability Console.

Email is integral to any business. If email goes down, companies' productivity goes with it. Veeam’s new Backup for Microsoft Office 365 enables companies to work without the need to maintain their own email infrastructure, but does not replace the need to have a local backup of email data. The new Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 helps reduce risks by securely backing up email data to the companies environment, quickly recover individual mailbox items with “best-of-breed” granularity, and efficiently perform eDiscovery of email archives with advanced search capabilities and flexible recovery and export options. Customers that purchase a Enterprise Plus edition of Veeam Availability Suite and Veeam Backup & Replication will receive a free three-year subscription of Microsoft Office 365.
