Veeam Software has announced Veeam Endpoint Backup Free, a standalone solution that gives users the ability to back up Windows-based laptops and desktops to an internal or external hard drive, NAS share, or a Veeam backup repository. Veeam Endpoint Backup Free adds to the company’s vast portfolio of free tools used by over 500,000 IT professionals and is the first designed for client computing needs.

At launch Backup Endpoint Free will support Windows 7 nad later along with Windows Server 2008 and later. There is support for limited server environments, but this is not intended to be a bare metal backup and recovery product for the enterprise. While it can be used in small IT environments with Windows servers, Veeam views this as a client-system product at launch. The physical server support is compelling though, to date Veeam has only supported virtualized servers. In this case Veeam is largely interested in helping IT managers backup and recover PCs in their environment. Depending on the reaction from the market, Veeam could use this as a platform to launch a more robust version of the application with wider OS support potentially, along with additional tools to help organizations secure and manage larger numbers of client computers.

When IT professionals need to do a restore, they can perform a bare-metal restore to the same or different hardware, a volume-level restore, or a file-level restore. The software package will not require the use of additional Veeam products; it will however integrate with Veeam Backup & Replication if it is present in the environment and will provide granular or full application recovery capabilities via Veeam Explorers for Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, SQL and Active Directory.

Availability

Veeam Endpoint Backup Free is slated for a 2015 release with public beta scheduled in November.
