Today Veeam released its third major update for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5. In this update Veeam has added some things that it was planning on waiting for the v10 such as agent management. This update also includes support for VMware Cloud on AWS and storage integration with IBM Spectrum Virtualize and Lenovo Storage V Series.
Today Veeam released its third major update for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5. In this update Veeam has added some things that it was planning on waiting for the v10 such as agent management. This update also includes support for VMware Cloud on AWS and storage integration with IBM Spectrum Virtualize and Lenovo Storage V Series.
Though initially set for the v10 release of Veeam Backup & Replication, the new agent management feature was completed so the company released it early. Now customers can manage Veeam Agents in the Backup & Replication console. According to the company, central management will be simplified along with a reduction in time for deployment and configuration. The new agent management in broken into several pieces.
The main component is the Protection group; Veeam wants users to think of this as a folder of objects that need protecting. Protection groups can contain individual computers added by DNS name or IP address, Active Directory objects, such as organizational units (OUs), groups or computers, and a list of hosts from a CSV file. Users can also exclude certain VMs or systems that have been offline for over 30 days to help prevent VMs from being protected twice. It also keeps Backup & Replication from trying to install the agent on systems that are no longer active.
Within the Protection group is the Backup job and Backup policy. Designed to protect mission-critical servers and Microsoft Failover Clusters, the Backup job is executed on the backup server while an agent acts like a client and performs backup activity triggered by its master server. Backup policy is aimed at workstation protection as they are a bit harder to schedule. According to the company, the backup policy keeps a template of job settings and automatically distributes this configuration to a newly assigned host with backup agent installed. Once the configuration is applied, the agent starts to perform backup activity on its own to the specified repository, so constant connection to the backup server is not required.
Announced at VMworld 2017, Veeam will now support VMware Cloud on AWS. That means customers who are running their complete VMware solution in the cloud, on AWS, can now use Veeam for backup, replication, and other use cases that they use Veeam for already. One use case that stands out for most is the ability to replicate on-prem VMs to VMware cloud on AWS. On another cloud related note is the Cloud Connect insider protection. This feature enables users to retain backups in a Cloud Connect service for a set amount of days after deletion. If a problem arises, users can go back to a deleted backup for restoration.
