Veritas has taken a slightly different route in expanding the reach of NetBackup. By releasing NetBackup RestAPI they have allowed customers in a broad range of industries access and native integration to NetBackup and their 360 Data Management Portfolio.

The company has updated it NetBackup to version 8.1.1. This new version comes with software optimized for security (including Federal Information Processing Standard [FIPS] certification). This makes it more attractive to local, state, and federal governments. The new version also adds more flexibility with the introduction of integration with Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) secure, durable, and affordable cloud storage service for data archiving and long-term backup service, Amazon Glacier.

Veritas has commissioned a new Study, The Truth in Cloud. Vanson Bourne, an independent specialist in market research for the technology sector, conducted this study. The study looked at 1,200 global business and IT decision makers. The study found that nearly all (99%) of the respondents were migrating to the cloud soon and 27% planned on outsourcing all on-premises infrastructure to the public cloud. With all the future cloud use in planning, the study found that several respondants weren’t fully aware of issues that arise form Cloud outages. Key findings include:

  • 60 percent of respondents have not fully evaluated the cost of a cloud outage
  • More than one in three expect less than 15 minutes of downtime per month, but the average downtime due to cloud outages is 22 minutes per month
  • Organizations need to evaluate their data protection and business continuity options to ensure they are “always on” in the cloud
