This week, Rick Vanover from Veeam visite4d the StorageReview lab in Cincinnati for a live stream to talk ransomware. We can’t go more than a few days with hearing about another breach or attempted breach. And this isn’t just a problem that targets large organizations like Tesla and Garmin. Small professional offices are just as likely to get hit. In fact, we just heard about a small medical practice that was able to recover from ransomware, but not without cost. They spent over $10k with their service provider to undo the damage.

As we know, ransomware doesn’t make its presence known. Often it sits idle for days or weeks, worming through a system before striking. It’s on the entire stack of IT professionals to do their part to prevent these attacks. Much of that falls on backup and recovery procedures, but it doesn’t stop there. Intelligent systems including primary and backup storage, need to be putting a plan in place to deal with these issues. Some are making great strides. In the past two podcasts with Pure Storage and Exagrid, we’ve covered how these companies are supporting their customers with it comes to ransomware.
Veeam too has a take on ransomware. While Veeam can’t provide visibility into everything going on in an organization, they have crafted and repurposed several tools to help fight this problem. Importantly, their view isn’t just a remediation one, Veeam is trying to flag issues that look suspicious before an event happens whether it’s ransomware or something else. While the live event has concluded, follow along in this replay, which includes a topical conversation that is useful even for those who are not Veeam customers.
