Today at VMworld 2015, VMware announced new End-User Computing (EUC) innovations. These announcements include a technology preview of VMware’s new “Project A2” to Accelerate Windows 10 Adoption, a new VMware Identity Manager Advanced Edition, and VMware Horizon 6.2 and VMware Horizon 6.2 for Linux. These innovations will help companies bridge the gap between traditional workforce to a more mobile and user- and application-centric experience.
Today at VMworld 2015, VMware announced new End-User Computing (EUC) innovations. These announcements include a technology preview of VMware’s new “Project A2” to Accelerate Windows 10 Adoption, a new VMware Identity Manager Advanced Edition, and VMware Horizon 6.2 and VMware Horizon 6.2 for Linux. These innovations will help companies bridge the gap between traditional workforce to a more mobile and user- and application-centric experience.
The ever increasing mobile workforce is introducing some challenges to IT. Users want to be able to work on and access data from their devices and yet IT needs a way to keep all the data and applications secure. In June, VMware conducted its Business Mobility Report that highlighted some of the above. The report found:
- Although only 17% of organizations have taken the transformative step to business mobility, shifting at least one core business process to a mobile paradigm, the industry is on the cusp of a major shift with nearly two-thirds (61%) of businesses actively re-engineering or planning to re-engineer a core business process to a mobile model in the immediate future.
- BYOD is active among many organizations with only 44% of companies requiring employees to work with company-owned devices.
- The top three goals for investing in business mobility innovations include increasing mobile workforce productivity (45%), streamlining business processes (34%) and reducing the cost of supporting a mobile workforce (31%).
VMware’s new EUC solutions will help business address this shift from client-server technologies to the new world of mobile-cloud technologies. The new EUC will deliver consumer-grade simplicity, platform heterogeneity, and accelerated application delivery for unified endpoint management, while accelerating the adoption of Windows 10.
VMware’s new Project A2 aims to redefine windows management and shift focus from endpoint management to application management. Windows 10 is mobile-cloud focused and businesses that upgrade to this OS need a mobile-centric approach such as the approach pioneered by AirWatch by VMware. Project A2 will accelerate Windows 10 adoption by using AirWatch enterprise mobile management (EMM) coupled with VMware App Volumes application delivery technology. Using Project A2, IT can seamlessly move existing physical Windows applications into the new Windows 10 mobile-cloud platform and apply an EMM approach across all applications. It will also give IT uniformed management over the entire fleet of Windows 10 devices, both desktop and mobile. And it will deliver a consistent end-user mobile workspace that provides access to all of users applications including Windows, SaaS and mobile, to any device.
VMware also introduced VMware Horizon 6.2 for Linux. This specialized version of Horizon 6.2 is aimed at specific requirements for security or high-end workstations. VMware Horizon 6.2 for Linux offers expanded support for NVIDIA GRID vGPU and shared graphics acceleration along with complete spectrum of 3D graphics delivery for any worker or any use case.

- Extending Application Delivery and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) with VMware Horizon 6.2 and VMware Horizon 6.2 for Linux — Continued innovation in application and desktop delivery will introduce several key advancements in VMware Horizon, including:
- Expanded support for applications at-scale that will deliver a rich user experience to global, multi-site deployment of virtual environments
- An enriched user experience with support for Skype for Business and NVIDIA GRID vGPU (virtual graphics processing unit)
- New VMware Virtual SAN storage optimizations that will include all-flash options delivering much lower costs and incredible performance
- Enhanced security capabilities including support for biometric fingerprint authentication
- Federal government readiness including FIPS 140-2 compliance
Availability and Pricing
VMware Identity Manager Advanced Edition, VMware Horizon 6.2 and VMware Horizon 6.2 for Linux are expected to be available in the third quarter of 2015.
