Today VMware announced a new service built on the foundation of the Istio Service Mesh, Vmware NSX Service Mesh. VMware is currently targetting a beta release early 2019 that will support only VMware Cloud PKS; with support for additional platforms rolling out later.
Istio is an open source service mesh supported by industry heavy hitters including Google and IBM. Istio layers transparently onto existing distributed applications to provide greater security, logging, and control. A service mesh in this context is an interface layer that intercepts the communications between a network of microservices. This gives IT teams a way to unify disparate services and architectures into one control pane to reduce the cost and complexity of future deployments. New services just need to know how to communicate with the service mesh and don’t need to worry about the unique architectures of the other services. Istio also provides Automatic load balancing for HTTP, gRPC, WebSocket, and TCP traffic; access controls, rate limits and quotas; control of traffic behavior with rich routing rules, retries, failovers, and fault injection; and several other control mechanisms.
VMware NSX Service Mesh will build on the foundation of Istio to include monitoring the data the services are using and the users that access the services at the API level. VMWare plans for the initial release to address issues they have been seeing in cloud-native environments. Notably, they’re hoping to simplify joining Kubernetes clusters currently deployed across multiple clouds. Naturally, it will also plug into the broader NSX portfolio to help maintain a unified set of policies and tools.
