VMware announced VMware Cloud Flex Storage, enterprise-class storage- and data management-as-a-service, will be available in Q3 2022. The preview for Cloud Flex Storage was announced earlier this year. Citing exponential growth of data consumption, creating diverse and complex storage requirements has resulted in customer demand for more flexible, seamless, and cost-effective options to store and manage data.
According to VMware, this service will address its vision to deliver broad workload support by enabling multi-dimensional and independent scaling of compute and storage performance and storage capacity for both traditional and modern workloads.
Cloud Flex Storage will be extended to multiple clouds, delivering a seamless and consistent management experience. An integrated data management solution will be rolled out as the service develops. Finally, Cloud Flex Storage is a pay-as-you-go service so customers can scale storage and compute independently of each other and will only pay for the resources consumed.
The initial release of Cloud Flex Storage will deliver a disaggregated elastic and natively integrated storage service for VMware Cloud on AWS, fully managed by VMware. Cloud Flex Storage is built on a mature, production-hardened, enterprise-class file system. This is the same file system used by the VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery service.
The file system follows a two-tier design to allow for independent scaling of storage performance and capacity. This design and the log-structured file system, APP-centric snapshots, incident cloning, and immutability make this a complete multi-purpose file system.
