VMware Collaborates with Microsoft

by Michael Rink

VMware and Microsoft announced that they would be collaborating to deliver a fully native, supported, and certified VMware cloud infrastructure on Microsoft Azure at the Dell Technologies World conference in Las Vegas. VMware is a well-known provider of virtualization services. They even already offer a similar product through Amazon Web Services. The new services were developed in collaboration not only with Microsoft but also with VMware Cloud Verified partners CloudSimple and Virtustream (a Dell Technologies company).

VMware and Microsoft announced that they would be collaborating to deliver a fully native, supported, and certified VMware cloud infrastructure on Microsoft Azure at the Dell Technologies World conference in Las Vegas. They even already offer a similar product through Amazon Web Services. The new services were developed in collaboration not only with Microsoft but also with VMware Cloud Verified partners CloudSimple and Virtustream (a Dell Technologies company).

The new Azure VMware Solutions are built on VMware Cloud Foundation – a comprehensive offering of software-defined compute, storage, networking, and management. Azure VMware Solutions supports migrating, extending and running existing VMware workloads from on-premises environments to Azure without the need to re-architect applications or retool operations. Dell thinks that this service will be particularly useful to customers looking to migrate applications off-premise or expand their datacenter.

Additionally, joint Microsoft 365 and VMware Workspace ONE customers will be able to manage Office 365 across devices via cloud-based integration with Microsoft Intune and Azure Active Directory. VMware will also extend the capabilities of Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop leveraging VMware Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure.

As a part of this agreement, VMware will extend the capabilities of Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop to enable customers to leverage VMware Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure. Initial capabilities are expected to be available as a tech preview by the end of the calendar year 2019. Microsoft recently announced Windows Virtual Desktop, which promises to deliver a multi-session Windows 10 experience, optimizations for Office 365 ProPlus, and support for Windows Server Remote Desktop Services (RDS) desktops and apps.

We should expect to see further collaboration between these companies going forward. They're already making noises about integrating VMware NSX with Azure Networking, for example, so we're curious to see what comes next.
