Today at VMworld 2018 in Las Vegas, VMware Inc. announce that it has made several new innovations to its NSX networking and security portfolio. The innovations are designed to further the company’s strategy of enabling consistent, pervasive connectivity and intrinsic security for applications and data across any environment. The new features in NSX will help customers to build a secure software-based network for their multi-cloud environments.

Throughout the day, VMware and others have been telling us how users can better leverage their multi-cloud environments through various updates and enhancements. One issue that is yet to be covered is network visibility over the various clouds. The new VMware NSX-T Data Center 2.3 cannot only ease visibility and management from a single place for the above environments, but it can bring a new level of intrinsic security for multi-cloud environments.

This version of NSX-T Data Center will take multi-cloud networking and security and extend it to AWS, Microsoft Azure, and on-prem environments. This connectivity is independent of the underlying cloud allowing customers to take advantage of different cloud providers as well as local resources. Aside from just supporting hypervisors and container environments, NSX-T Data Center 2.3 also supports bare metal hosts such as Linux-based workloads running on bare-metal servers and containers running on ware-metal with no hypervisors. This level of support is done through using Open vSwitch. And, of course, NSX-T technology supports VMware Cloud on AWS.

Aside from the above benefits, NSX-T Data Center 2.3 claims that it will simplify installation, configuration, and management with its new deployment workflows and search functionality. Components are installed in a simplified workflows and management is made easier through the new search interface. NSX-T technology is combined with the latest version of vRealize Automation 7.5 to further ease management through automation. One other new feature that will allow policies to be applied to data center and multi-cloud infrastructure is the introduction of new APIs driven by natural languages and declarative statements for security.

VMware vRealize Network Insight 3.9 new has new support for NSX-T Data Center enabling customers to accelerate micro-segmentation planning and deployment, plan application migration, and gain operational views to manage, scale, and enforce compliance for VMware NSX data center deployments. VMware claims that this should reduce business risk, time, and costs associated with security planning enabling availability and migration planning for their business-critical applications.

Availability

VMware NSX-T 2.3 is expected to be available in VMware’s third fiscal quarter of 2019.
