With vSphere 6.7 Update 2, VMware is deprecating support for external Platform Services Controllers (PSCs). This is a move VMware has been building towards for some time now. With VMware vCenter Server enhanced link mode, which was introduced in vSphere 6.7, infrastructure teams can link up to fifteen vCenter Server instances in the embedded PSC topology. The vCenter Server Converge Tool introduced in vSphere 6.7 Update 1 enables VI admins to migrate topologies with external PSCs to topologies with embedded PSCs. Between that and the other updates in 6.7 update 2, VMware now feels that their embedded PSCs provide all the same benefits external ones did, but with less complexity. In happier news, vSphere 6.7 Update 2 introduces a new vCenter Server Converge Tool UI to provide intuitive snapshots of infrastructure environments and enables VI admins to make informed life cycle management decisions. The new UI provides topological and extended views of the relationships between components such asvCenter Server instances and PSC; embedded vCenter Server instances and other embedded vCenter Server instances; health checks; and replication status. Even better for customers running database intensive applications such as SAP HANA, vSphere 6.7 Update 2 adds support for 256 vCPUs and 6TB of vRAM.
Customers who are using Intel Skylake or older processors continue to rely on the hypervisor or operating systems to protect against the L1TF security vulnerability. vSphere 6.7 Update 2 provides enhanced protection against L1TF with a modified scheduler that also recaptures performance impacted by the vulnerability.
vSphere ROBO Enterprise, or vSphere Remote Office Branch Office Enterprise, is the new highest end edition of vSphere Remote Office Branch Office offered by VMware. vSphere ROBO is designed to support servers running in remote offices with few or no local IT engineers. Enterprise makes it easier for customers to perform maintenance on remote hosts by delivering Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) in Maintenance Mode. It automatically moves VMs out of a server when it goes offline for maintenance and brings the VMs back to the server afterward. vSphere Remote Office Branch Office Enterprise also adds support for VM-level encryption.Since encryption occurs at a hypervisor level, it is VM agnostic, i.e. works with any VM and guest-OS.
vSphere Platinum is the new premier edition of vSphere and combines the features of vSphere Enterprise Plus with VMware AppDefense.
