Today WD, a Western Digital company, introduced a new high capacity 3.5” hard drive purpose built for the greater demands of scalable network video recorder (NVR) surveillance systems, the WD Purple NV. The WD Purple NV comes in both 4TB and 6TB capacities and has a 3-year warranty.
Today WD, a Western Digital company, introduced a new high capacity 3.5” hard drive purpose built for the greater demands of scalable network video recorder (NVR) surveillance systems, the WD Purple NV. The WD Purple NV comes in both 4TB and 6TB capacities and has a 3-year warranty.
Unlike WD’s Purple drives, the Purple NV is designed for larger scale surveillance systems. Larger scale systems need higher drive bay counts and a greater number of cameras, which demands increased capacity and durability. The Purple NV have up to 6TB of capacity to enable longer retention periods, has low power consumption, and the new drives can withstand the always-on nature of NVR recording environments. According to WD the 4TB can hold up to 307 hours of video and the 6TB can hold up to 461 hours of video.
WD Purple NV drives are equipped with:
- AllFrame – When combined with ATA streaming support, AllFrame technology helps to reduce video footage loss with a proprietary cache policy management technology to help improve data flow and playback. WD Purple includes exclusive firmware upgrades that protect against video pixilation and interruptions within a surveillance system.
- Premium Protection – Designed with tarnish-resistant components, WD Purple NV offers premium protection in harsh environments where surveillance systems can be installed.
- Support for High-Camera-Count Systems – WD Purple NV hard drives are optimized to support systems utilizing high numbers of high-definition surveillance cameras, giving you the flexibility to upgrade and expand your security system in the future. Higher storage capacities also allow you to store the surveillance footage for a longer period of time, especially in situations when every second counts.

Availability
The 6TB Purple NV is shipping now for qualification, the 4TB Purple NV is expected to ship for qualification later this quarter. Both capacities are expected to ship in volume within the quarter.
