Today, along with their updated Purple drives, Western Digital has announced two new massive HDD releases, the WD Red Pro 16TB, and 18TB drives. Purpose-built for medium to large-scale business customers and support for up to 24-bay NAS systems, the new Red Pro drives are engineered with CMR recording technology at 7200RPM, allowing them to handle high-intensity workloads in 24×7 environments. WD indicates that they are perfect for archiving and sharing use cases and are well suited for RAID array rebuilding on extended operating systems including ZFS.

The new WD Red Pro drives feature NASware 3.0, the company’s advanced firmware technology. This allows for seamless integration, comprehensive data protection, and optimal performance under heavy loads in NAS systems. NASware 3.0 also improves storage performance by increasing compatibility, integration, upgradeability, and reliability.
The new high-capacity WD Red Pro drives also feature a multi-axis shock sensor that automatically detects subtle shock events, as well as dynamic fly height technology, which adjusts each read-write function to compensate and protect the data. These features help to protect the drives in larger NAS systems while improving hard drive reliability.
Availability
WD Red Pro 16TB and 18TB HDDs are slated to ship some time next month.
