Western Digital's CL SN720 NVMe SSD is designed for stand-alone or edge applications. It uses Western Digital's new internally developed controller and firmware architectures. Different models provide storage capacities ranging from 256GB to an impressive 2TB in the M.2 form factor. Performance improves as storage size increases on these models. The 256GB model only manages 185k IOPS, but the 1TB model more than doubles that at 400k IOPS. The smaller storage models do have an advantage in durability with a mean time to failure of nine million hours vs. four million hours for the 1TB model.
Coming later this year, Western Digital's Ultrastar DC SN630 NVMe SSD is a 2.5-inch small form factor SDD designed for cloud storage. It uses Western Digital's new internally developed controller and firmware architectures. Recognizing the tradeoffs between per-drive storage capacity and drive endurance, Western Digital is offering two series of configurations. The first configuration is a higher endurance series ranging in capacity from 800GB to 6.4TB that all support two drive-writes per day. Not everyone needs to be able to support that much writing, however, and so Western Digital is also planning to offer a series of drives ranging in capacity from 960GB to 7.68TB but only able to support 0.8 drive-writes per day.
