Western Digital has edged Seagate in the first quarter of this year for total hard drive shipments, giving them the number one spot for the quarter after trailing by only the slimmest margin in 2009. Thanks in large part to sales of notebook drives, Western Digital posted a tally of 51.1 million drives sold, compared to 50.3 million for Seagate.
Data from The Information Network and complied by DigiTimes breaks down the leaderboard.
In 2009 a total of 558 million hard drives were shipped. Seagate led with 31.4% market share, barely ahead of WD. Hitachi was third with a 16.4% share, followed by Toshiba/Fujitsu with a 12.6% share.
Of the 558 million hard drives shipped, 211 million were of the mobile variety. The race here is tight, though WD leads with a 28% market share, followed within 2 points by Toshiba/Fujitsu, Hitachi and Seagate.
In the desktop hard drive space, 306 million HDDs shipped in 2009 where Seagate led with a 43% share followed by WD with 32%.
Analysts believe that the desktop and mobile hard drive spaces will cross over this year, with mobile drives leading the total market, thereby positioning Western Digital to not only maintain their small lead from the first quarter of this year, but to expand on it.
