According to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), who would know such things, 84% of organizations were running containers in production in 2019, up 15% from a year before. In fact, some would argue that the best technology is coming packaged in containers and if organizations don’t adapt, they will be left behind. Yet many organizations are still intimidated by the concept of containers. While containers are commonplace for businesses “born in the cloud” or “cloud-native” applications, more traditional virtualization-first organizations may not be adapting fast enough.

On this podcast, I talk with Sheng Liang, CEO of Rancher Labs. Rancher offers a number of products designed to help organizations manage Kubernetes clusters. In their words, “Rancher is a complete software stack for teams adopting containers. It addresses the operational and security challenges of managing multiple Kubernetes clusters while providing DevOps teams with integrated tools for running containerized workloads.”
Sheng has been in the container game for longer than most and has insights that are beneficial for anyone whether adopting Kubernetes or any other form of containers. Over the course of the podcast, we cover a number of topics including:
- Where we are with containers today.
- Are containers used outside of home-grown applications?
- How does Rancher play in this space and what’s the benefit?
- Why is it that Kubernetes is winning?
- Edge computing and analytics is all the rage, what’s the play for containers at the edge?
- The competitive landscape is hot – VMware with Tanzu and IBM with a variety of RedHat projects, why is Rancher the better alternative?
- What is the impact of containers on infrastructure?
- New features in Rancher 2.5, which was released this week.
