Dell Precision Optimizer Software Overview

by Adam Armstrong

The Dell Precision line of workstations has produced several high-performant units over the last few years. All precision workstations come with customizability, some more so than others. This gives the tinkerers a chance to build the system for exactly what they need. As more and more users are moving to workstations, not everyone wants to set up specific hardware to meet their applications. Most would rather take a unit off the shelf and have a way to easily optimize it for their use case. Dell answers this call with its Precision Optimizer software that aims to do just that.

The primary function of the Optimizer software is to squeeze out as much performance as possible for the given workstation. The software leverages its patent-pending AI based optimization to get the best bang for its buck in the applications being used. Dell states that users just have to tell it which applications need to be optimized and the software will use machine learning to improve the performance of those applications. Dell also makes the claim that in certain cases substantial performance increases can be had over factory settings.

The Optimizer software also comes with built in analytics and reporting. This nifty feature allows users to monitor their system, including storage and graphics, and address issues as they arise. The analytics give users real-time graphs and charts allowing for easy identification of bottlenecks as they occur. Knowing what resources are being stressed, users can pro-actively address the issues and avoid bottlenecks.

From a management perspective, Dell Precision Optimizer can help centralize IT management on multiple machines with headless client, remotely optimize application performance on end-user systems, and remotely gather analytics from users into SCCM or KACE. The software can simplify management by allowing admins to get the latest updates for BIOS, firmware, drivers, application profiles, and Dell applications.

Dell Precision Optimizer comes in both standard (free) and premium ($175) options. For this review we are looking at the premium version. The main difference being that the premium comes with AI-based custom performance optimization, profile sharing, and automatic performance optimization for Unreal Engine for AR/VR/MR.
